This is a common problem for players who take lessons but do not have the opportunity to practice
between lessons. Like learning to play the piano, or other instrument, learning how to play tennis within the bounds
of improving form, consistency, footwork and co-ordination must be properly addressed between lessons. |
|

Obviously, hitting on a wall or ball machine can help you work on aspects of stroking the ball
without having to have a partner. However, I must caution you: I have seen more harm done by players who think
that they are working on their game by hitting on a wall while using just wrist movements and incorrect swing patterns
over and over. But the ball comes back too fast for them to use proper form. |

Over the 28 years that I have taught tennis, for the most part, I have never been fond of training
gimmicks. However, over the past 6 months, I have found a device that really provides the student improvement for
almost every element of stroke production. They can make ground strokes while minimizing the possible negative effects
of hitting on a wall as mentioned. The device is called the PracticeHit. It has a foam ball on the tip of a fiberglass
shaft that is attached to a base and allows the shaft and ball to swing back and forth. Bands can be adjusted to
control the speed at which the shaft oscillates. |
